Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic medical procedure that utilizes high-frequency sound waves for producing images of the structures within the body. It helps doctors in diagnosing the cause of swelling, infection, and pain in internal organs, and to examine a fetus (unborn child) during pregnancy. Since the images captured by an ultrasound machine are real-time, doctors are able to analyze internal organs & tissues for example to monitor the heart valve and blood flow functions.

Preparation
Most ultrasound scans may require special preparations. However, it’s important to wear comfortable clothes for the appointment, and refrain from wearing valuable jewellery or accessories, as you may be asked to remove them during the procedure. To perform an abdominal ultrasound, scan the doctor may ask the patients not to consume water or food for a specific duration before the examination.
For a pelvic scan, patients who are less than 14 weeks pregnant will have to fill their bladder with water- a full bladder is a requirement for the scan. This is because, when the bladder gets distended by water, it displaces the bowel, leading to better visualization of pelvic organs.
As there are no ionizing radiations involved, ultrasound is 100% risk-free, making it suitable for children.
Procedure
An ultrasound scan is a safe way of visualizing real-time images of a body’s structure or organs using sound waves. It is painless, and works differently than a conventional X-ray, as it does not use any harmful radiation.
It is important to note that this method of imaging is not an ideal option for imaging all parts of a patient’s body, especially the bones and tissues filled with air like the lungs. However, ultrasound can provide adequate images of fluid filled or solid organs such as liver, uterus and gall bladder.
Based on the medical history and symptoms of the patient, the doctor may recommend common types of ultrasound scans, including:
- Pelvis scan
- Abdominal scan
- Breast scan
- Pregnancy scan
- Renal scan
- Vascular scan
- 3D or 4D ultrasound scan
- Liver elastography
On average, the entire procedure will take less than an hour. After successful competition of the procedure, the jelly applied on the body for scanning is wiped off and the physician may give alternate or additional instructions, depending on the patient’s health conditions.
Imaging
Ultrasound imaging do not cause any complications or after-effects. It is safe, painless, and often recommended as a part of diagnosis, progress to ongoing treatment and a routine checkups. As it’s a drug-free and non-invasive procedure, patients should be able to resume their normal activities immediately after the scan.
Upon completion of the scan, our certified radiologists interpret the investigations and provide the report within a day.
